HS Meath Football Team of the Week

May 25, 2017

Rathkenny and Donaghmore Ashbourne players argue as to who should make our team of the week.

Shane Duffy (Ratoath): Behind every good team is a good 'keeper. There were two of them on display at Dunsany as Shane Geraghty excelled for Na Fianna but we have gone for the former Monaghan star. Solid and some fine saves including one from a penalty. His precision kick outs proved crucial for the winners.

Shane Gallagher (Simonstown Gaels): A player who could be worth a look at county level, Gallagher delivered an outstanding defensive display from corner back. Had a great battle with Cilles danger man James Conlon which he just edged.

Niall McKeigue (Navan O'Mahonys): Still going strong. The former Keegan Cup winning captain was his usual tower of strength on the edge of the square as the 'Hoops' saw off a stubborn Blackhall Gaels at Dunshaughlin.

Jordan McLoughlin (Dunboyne): A future county senior defender in the making perhaps. Tight, tenacious and very effective in his side's opening round win over Dunshaughlin at headquarters.

Donal Keogan (Rathkenny): We could have put the county senior anywhere on this team such was his performance against Donaghmore Ashbourne. One of the best individual displays seen at headquarters in years and he ended with 1-1 to his name.

Barry Tormey (Gaeil Colmcille): As always, an impressive performance from the Kells centre back. Tight marking, tough tackling and a team leader as Tones were put to the sword with that late blood sub goal in Athboy.

David Toner (Curraha): Four points from the half back line for the Meath junior as Curraha got their Intermediate campaign off to a winning start against Kilmainham in Castletown.

Mark O'Sullivan (Moynalvey): The inter county hurling star made a return to club action and proceeded to give a fine display in the middle of the park as 'dark horses' Moynalvey picked up both points against Seneschalstown.

Mark McCabe (Simonstown): Filled the void left by Conor Nash to great effect. Along with Shane O'Rourke he dominated the middle sector and his three second half points were one of the highlights in a very entertaining game against St. Colmcilles.

Seamus Mattimoe (Gaeil Colmcille): A Man of the Match display from the lively attacker. He ran the Wolfe Tones defence ragged and scored three fine points in that late, late win at Athboy.

Ben Brennan (St Colmcilles): The talented play maker pulled the strings for the All-Ireland club intermediate finalists. Heavily involved in most of the Cilles' good play and chipped in with four points in that narrow loss to the senior champions.

Kevin Lyons (Summerhill): A very solid display from the 'Hill' half forward. Covered all areas of Pairc Tailteann and scored two fine points as John Lyons' charge made a winning start against Duleek-Bellewstown.

Kevin Ross (Castletown): Ballivor had no answer to the county panellist at Kilmainham. Ross helped himself to an impressive 2-6 as Hank Traynor's side began Group B with a comfortable 3-16 to 0-7 win.

John Broderick (Donaghmore Ashbourne): Back to his best after a few years interrupted by injury. An ideal target man and showed his worth to the 'Moores' senior side with a goal and five from play against Rathkenny in Pairc Tailteann.

Shane Landy (St Patricks): His goal and four points were crucial as Niall Russell's men stunned last year's semi-finalists Skryne to get their campaign off to a perfect start at Duleek.
