FL Div 2: Syddan sink neighbours Castletown

Kevin Traynor - Killary Emmets

SYDDAN 3-11 CASTLETOWN 1-11

SYDDAN collected their opening brace of points in division two of the A League when accounting for their neighbours in a keenly contested clash at Castletown on Saturday evening.

The visitors were never behind at any stage but a six point lead came under threat at different stages in the second half.

However it was a much slicker Syddan who finished the stronger and outscored their opponents 2-2 to three points in the final 10 minutes.

The hosts lost Wayne Donegan to a black card after just three minutes and were wayward in their shooting throughout the opening half as Syddan led 1-6 to 0-4 at the break.

The goal arrived when Ronan Mooney cut through before hitting a well-placed effort low to the Castletown net. Almost immediately Kevin Ross had a goal opportunity at the other end but Ciaran Farrelly produced a fine save.

Daire Rowe increased the Syddan lead on the restart with a point before Castletown struck for a goal when Barry Smith found the net. They should have had a second goal minutes later but Ross shot straight at keeper Farrelly.

Two successive points from Ross reduced the deficit to the minimum before Syddan spurned a goal opportunity when Daire Rowe had a penalty saved by Paul Smith.

Heading into the final quarter there was still a point between the sides but Syddan were boosted by a Kevin Traynor goal, his effort from long range deceiving keeper Smith.

Despite that setback Castletown hit back to be just two points in arrears with a little over seven minutes remaining. Syddan though pressed home their advantage in the closing stages with points from Cormac Rowe and Fiachra Ross while their third goal was scored by substitute Brian Dillon.

Referee Jack Gordon was forced to bring proceedings to an end 30 seconds early when Castletown's Ross Blaney suffered a nasty leg injury that necessitated hospital treatment.

SYDDAN - Ciaran Farrelly; Kevin Garland, Ben Bashford, Cormac Rafferty; Kevin Traynor 1-1, Jack Reid, Mark Fedigan; Sean Clare 0-1, Peter Sheehy; Ronan Mooney 1-0, Cormac Rowe 0-1, Michael Fedigan; Graham Garland, Gary Farrelly 0-2 (1f), Daire Rowe 0-4 (1f).
