Club Hurling Team of the Week

August 31, 2016

Blackhall Gaels provided a stern test for champions Kiltale in Pairc Tailteann.

Three in a row chasing Kiltale had to pull out all the stops to see off a stubborn Blackhall Gaels. Killyon defeated Trim with that last minute score. Longwood overturned an eleven point deficit in the last 15 minutes to win by two while Kilmessan, Dunboyne and Dunderry also collected valuable points. We pick out best XV from another good weekend of club hurling action.

1. Stephen Quinn Killyon: Having an outstanding year for the club and not his first time in the Team of the Week. Made a match winning save from James Toher's penalty at a crucial stage of the game.

2. Padraig Maguire Kilmessan: At a time when Kilmessan were under immense pressure, Maguire was there to get a vital touch in and made some timely clearances that inspired those around him.

3. Shane Brennan Kilmessan: Drove his side forward at every opportunity and worked tirelessly throughout; making some important interceptions as Kildalkey went in search of an equaliser.

4 Anthony Donnelly Kiltale: Solid and dependable at the back for the champions. A great source of encouragement to the younger players out the field as Blackhall provided a stern test in Pairc Tailteann.

5 Stephen Donoghue Kiltale: Normal service from one of the veterans of this outstanding Kiltale team. Carried out his defensive duties to great effect and his second half point to settle the Jubilee Cup holders was one of the scores of the game.

6. Mickey Burke Longwood: Another solid performance from the county senior footballer. Hit two fine scores as Longwood came from eleven points down with fifteen minutes to go to claim a 0-22 to 3-11 win over O'Mahonys in Athboy.

7. Maurice Keogh Kildalkey: Solid and dependable as ever. A real rock at the back for the Village, setting up numerous attacks and thwarted the Kilmessan forwards on numerous occasions.

8. Keith Keogan Killyon: If Declan Mullen's side are to claim the Jubilee Cup a lot will depend on their free taker. Once again superb from the dead ball situation. Scored seven points, 6 from frees including two great efforts towards the end in that win over Trim.

9. Stephen Morris Blackhall Gaels: A brilliant shift from the county senior hurler. Tremendous work rate coupled with three outstanding points as the Gaels put it up to the county champions in Pairc Tailteann.

10. Shane Whitty Blackhall Gaels: Outstanding from play and frees as Blackhall gave Kiltale a severe test in Pairc Tailteann. Hit an impressive twelve points and was always involved in the action in his play maker role.

11. Conor Farrell Dunderry: Lit up an otherwise dull encounter. Boardsmill could not handle the talented centre forward. Scored four fine points in that 0-12 to 1-3 win at headquarters.

12. Ryan Moore Longwood: Despite The Wood's poor championship form this season, Moore has been a source of inspiration. His six points against O'Mahony's were crucial in that brilliant comeback win at Athboy.

13. Sean Quigley Dunboyne: The energetic county star ran riot against Clann na nGael, scoring 2-08 and setting up many scores in their facile victory at Kilmessan.

14. Adam Gannon Killyon: Tormented Trim over the hour at Kildalkey. Hit five wonderful points from play and provided the cross field pass for that match winning score from Calvin Ryan.

15. Peter Durnin Kiltale: The three in a row chasing county champions done all the damage in the first half against Blackhall Gaels. Durnin was the chief tormentor hitting 2-3 in the opening 30 and finished with a personal tally of 3-3.
