The weekend: it's all about Dublin and Croke Park

June 24, 2016

Nothing beats a Meath versus Dublin clash in Croke Park.

Followers of Meath GAA are spoilt for choice this weekend with a host of big games to look forward to. Amazingly Dublin and Croke Park are involved in all our matches.

The Meath senior ladies get proceedings underway tomorrow when they host Dublin in the third round of the Leinster Senior Football Championship. Meath were easily beaten by Westmeath in the opening round but showed remarkable improvement to draw with Laois last week. A strong Dublin outfit defeated Westmeath with ease in Round 2. However, with bragging rights at stake, the Royals will be seeking another big performance.

Over in Croke Park, the Meath camogie team commence their All Ireland Intermediate championship campaign with a clash against Down. The two counties met in the All Ireland Junior final. Meath came out on top that day on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-9.

By 5 o'clock, a large crowd should have gathered to witness the replay of the Christy Ring Cup final. Enough has been written about this one over the past few weeks but fair play to the Meath hurlers for agreeing to a re-match and justice will be done if James Toher is handed back the silverware.

Sunday gets underway with the short trip to Clane for the Under 16 A Leinster Ladies football final. Our young Royals take on Dublin. They met in the first round of the competition and Meath recored a 6-6 to 3-7 win on the astro pitch in Dunganny. A very talented Meath team will be looking to repeat that performance.

Then it's on to the big one. Get to Croke Park early for Westmeath and Kildare and witness a bit of history with the showing of Ireland versus France on the Big Screens at HQ. Our seniors get underway at 6.35. Most pundits don't give us a chance but Meath/Dublin games take on a mind of their own and anything can happen.

Most Royals supporters should be home around 9.30, barring a few pit stops,  just in time to catch up with all the weekend action on the Sunday Game.
