MFL Div 4: Super sub Swaine inspires Clann Na nGael

May 25, 2016

Darragh Swaine shoots low to find the back of the Killary Emmets net for Clan Na nGael during the Meath MFL Div 4 final at Pairc Tailteann.

Clann Na nGael 2-17 Killary Emmets 1-12

THE scoreline was hardly a fair reflection as Killary Emmet's bid for MFL division 4 honours came up marginally short at Pairc Tailteann.

It was half-time substitute Darragh Swaine who did most to dash Killary hopes with a brilliant second half display of marksmanship which yielded a goal and five points, all from play.

The Syddan/Castletown combination made a terrific start to proceedings as they opened up a 1-3 to 0-0 advantage after just seven minutes.

Mark Kelly was on target with the points while Paul Bellew pounced to finish to the net after a Padraic Dillon effort had crashed off the crossbar.

Clann na nGael responded with their opening score, a goal from Conor Hayes. Earlier Killary keeper Shane Clare made the first of two fine saves in the half. Bellew and Cormac Rafferty had further points for Killary but the Athboy side hit back to be on level terms with five minutes of the half remaining.

However Killary finished strongly and deservedly led 1-8 to 1-5 at the break following three further points from Kelly.

With wind advantage in the second half Clann na nGael dominated for long spells and they were back on level terms after Swaine shot his opening point on 37 minutes.

They then went two points clear before Cormac Rafferty opened Killary's second half account on 41 minutes. Conor Hayes and Rory Tuite added to the Clann na nGael tally and by the 48th minute they led 1-12 to 1-9.

Then within a four minute spell Swaine added and goal and two points to leave it 2-14 to 1-10 and effectively put the game beyond the reach of Killary.

Rafferty and Kelly added further points for Killary but there was no stopping Swaine as he shot another brace of points before the finish.
