St. Vincents Robbie Lynch

St. Vincent’s 1-8 Moynalty 0-9

St. Vincent’s started their Junior Football Championship campaign with a high noon showdown with old rivals Moynalty in Slane on Sunday.

These two clubs have had many great battles over the years and this one was no different. St. Vincent’s took to the field in a new kit of traditional maroon jerseys kindly sponsored by Ronan Sheridan Plant Hire.

The Vincent’s opened brightly and Bob Tallon scored a well worked point from play in the 3rd minute. This was quickly followed in the 5th minute by an excellent point from play from Paddy Arnold, having won a mark from Evan Connor’s kickout he exchanged passes and slotted over. Moynalty then found their rhythm and scored three unanswered points from play between the 7th and 15th minute. Nigy Hand converted a free a minute later and before the kickout the referee called for the first water break. It was all square at three all.

Moynalty won the kickout after the short recess and worked a great move down field which resulted in a point from play. From the kickout the Vincent’s played a long ball out of defence which was won thirty metres from goal by Eoghan Corry. He passed wide to Nigy Hand who centred it for Eric Callaghan to palm the ball to the net. The Vincent’s were moving well now and after a barren spell of scoring Nigy Hand converted a free on 27 minutes. Bob Tallon scored an excellent point from play from the forty five metre line on 30 minutes and Hand converted a free with the last kick of the half.

Half time St. Vincent’s 1-6 Moynalty 0-4.

Moynalty started the second half on the front foot and quickly scored a point from play. Moynalty kept chipping away at the deficit and two more points from play in the 39th and 43rd minutes left two between the sides. Substitute Patrick McGill steadied the ship for St. Vincent’s with a point from play on 44 mins before the teams had their well-deserved second water break.

After the restart Moynalty struck instantly again with a well worked point from play on 47 mins but McGill hit back from play again in the 48th with what proved to be the Vincent’s last score.
Ten minutes passed before Moynalty pointed from play to reduce the gap to two again. The Vincent’s created but wasted several scoring chances in the final quarter and were happy to get over the line with a deserved but hard fought two point victory.

There was several good performances on the Vincent’s team but man of the match Mark Crawley was outstanding in defence.
