JFC: Deserved win for St. Brigids

August 03, 2020

Stephen Browne St Brigids

St Brigids 1-6 Kilmainhamwood  0-7

Not too long ago we thought club GAA would be  nothing short of a dream for 2020. Yet on Saturday August 1st we found ourselves in the well kept pitch of Moynalty ready to get our Championship campaign up and running.

The weather was unpredictable and hard to read - which ended up being a reflection on the game itself. St Brigids faced a strong breeze for the first half & a strong Kilmainhamwood side to match. Kevin Gilsenan put  the Brigids on the scoreboard within the opening two minutes to give the Brigids a confident start, however it quickly became obvious that this was going to be anything but an easy game. Kilmainhamwood went hard at the St Brigids defense and slotted over their own scores both from play and frees. With the first half looking likely to end on 4 points a piece, it was a Brigids kick out  excellently won by Joe Blake that worked it’s way to the  full forward line and found Stephen Browne who made sure it ended up in the Kilmainhamwood net to put the Brigids ahead by a goal leading into the second half.

Kilmainhamwood made sure they came out all guns blazing,  and brought the game level in the first 10 minutes of the second half where a large falling of rain left the playing surface less then ideal. St Brigids lost Darach Geraghty to a harsh straight red card at the half way point, but instead of looking defeated the Ballinacree men appeared to get the fire back in their bellies and put on a great display of team work and effort for the remainder. Further points by Kevin & Joe Blake, alongside a superbly saved penalty by Dylan Scully ensured that the Brigids left the pitch with a much deserved win.

A very intense and physical game from start to finish and an excellent performance by the Brigids defense & keeper has to praised.
