Joe Cassells receives the centenary cup

Joe Cassell's career in a Meath jersey stretched from 1974 to 1990. In that period the Navan O'Mahonys star picked up 2 All Ireland's, 4 Leinster's and 2 NFL's along with a Centenary Cup medal.

Here's an interesting stat from the programme for the 1986 National Football League Quarter Final clash with Dublin.

Joe Cassells was at midfield in the team that last brought the National League title to An Mhi in 1975.

He made history in 1984 when he stepped up following the Ford Centenary Cup final win over Muineachan to become the first and only man to receive the trophy. He played at centre half back in that game.

A former county minor, Cassells collected his second successive Railway Cup medal on St. Patricks Day.

Last year he had a major role in shaping an historic double for Navan O'Mahonys. The club regained the senior football crown after four years and took their first county senior hurling title. Cassells, who is 31, was a top performer at midfield in both final wins.

For the record Dublin won that quarter final meeting 2-8 to 1-10. The Royals turned the tables 4 month's later beating their neighbours 0-9 to 0-7 in the Leinster Final.

Joe had a bigger trophy to lift in 1988.
