Number 7 pick: Meath's Best Team from our last four All-Ireland wins

March 30, 2020

Meath's Hank Traynor, Paddy Reynolds and Martin O'Connell

Unprecedented quiet times on the GAA front and with no return on the horizon because of Covid-19 we have come up with a novel way to keeping your Royal GAA mind occupied.

Since 1987 we have won four All-Ireland finals. You the reader can have a say in picking our Best XV from that glorious era.

There are three contenders for the last jersey on the half back line.

Martin O'Connell made this position his own during  that glorious period from '87 to '91. The Millennium Man is Meath's most decorated footballer and during his very illustrious career picked up three All Ireland's (at half back in '87 and '88 and at corner back in 1996), 6 Leinster's, 3 NFL's and no less than 4 All Star awards.

Paddy Reynolds switched wing back positions in 1999 but for the 1996 championship, and playing in front of O'Connell, shone in a fine campaign that culminated in that All Ireland win over Mayo after a replay. The Walterstown clubman won an All Star in 1999.

Hank Traynor took over the number 7 jersey in 1998. The Simonstown star gave years of valuable service to the Green and Gold and was one of the rocks in the Meath defence as Cork were put to the sword in our last All Ireland win.
