Corn na Boinne: Syddan set up semi final date with neighbours

SYDDAN 4-9 KILMAINHAM 1-7

SYDDAN set up a semi-final clash with neighbours Castletown after securing the victory necessary to progress in the Corn Na Boinne in blustery conditions at Ludlow Park on Saturday.

Kilmainham were in the game for two thirds of the way but they failed to add to their tally in the final 20 minutes as Syddan accounted for 1-5 to end comfortable winners.

A strong crossfield wind made matters difficult for both teams and it was Syddan who made the more promising start with two goals from full forward Sean Clare in the opening nine minutes.

Freddie Newman and Dylan Morgan had the visitors off the mark with points and they benefited from a fortuitous goal when Andrew Garland's intended pass back to keeper Ben Corcoran was caught by the wind and the ball ended in the Syddan net.

A second point from Morgan had the sides level 1-3 to 2-0 after 18 minutes but Syddan finished the half strongly with point from Kevin Traynor and Paddy Farrelly. Then on the stroke of half-time Cormac Rowe netted to leave it 3-2 to 1-3 at the break.

The visitors hit the opening three points of the second half to close the gap to two but those scores were cancelled out by points from Ronan Mooney and Daire Rowe.

Conor Kilgallen pointed for Kilmainham on 39 minutes but they didn't score again after that. Two pointed frees from Daire Rowe and one from play from Kevin Traynor left Syddan two goals clear entering the final quarter.

Daire Rowe put the issue beyond doubt with his side's fourth goal on 53 minutes and Mooney and Kevin Garland added further points before the finish.
