Round 1 of the LMFM Minor Football Championship takes place this evening with no fewer than seventeen games being played across the county as the young players set out in search of Championship glory.

There is one game postponed as the St. Peter’s Dunboyne v Navan O’Mahonys encounter in Division 2B is postponed to Sunday September 1st as a mark of respect to the family of the late Mikey Leddy.

Division 1A

Trim v St. Colmcilles (Venue – Trim):  A potentially thrilling encounter to get the Championship underway sees the League winners St. Colmcilles travel to Trim where they are guaranteed to get a stiff test. In 2018 Trim also hosted the League winners in Round 1 and Seneschalstown were delighted to eke out a victory in what was a harder than anticipated encounter.

Have Trim the defenders to hold what is a very potent St. Colmcilles attack or can Trim gain the upperhand around the key battlefield that will be midfield?

This one could be a cracker.

St. Ultan’s/Cortown Gaels/Round Towers v Skryne (Venue – Sean Newman Park):  It’s a tough test for the team who have moved up from Division 2 as they welcome Skryne to Bohermeen this evening but it’s a task they will relish.

Skryne haven’t hit the heights they are capable of so far this year and with St. Ultan’s/Cortown Gaels/Round Towers coming off the back of an impressive Summer League, albeit in Division 2, they might just have more than a lively chance of upsetting the Tara outfit but if Niall Finnerty hits top gear they will have difficulties holding him. 

Verdict – Skryne.

Division 1B

Simonstown v Duleek Bellewstown (Venue – Simonstown):   A repeat of the Spring League opener which Simonstown won by seven points and on the basis of form since then they will enter this game as warm favourites. 

In Josh Carolan and Tadgh Hanrahan they have a midfield pairing which has few peers at this level and if they can win plenty of possession it could be a difficult evening for Duleek-Bellewstown. They though have a classy forward in Alan Bowden who will make hay in any conditions and if he catches fire then Simonstown could be in bother. 

Verdict – Simonstown.

Summerhill v Seneschalstown (Venue -Summerhill):  Summerhill were scintillating in the recent Summer League final with Adam McDonnell practically unmarkable up front while being ably assisted by Eoghan Frayne and Ben Moran. 

Seneschalstown won the Division 2 Spring League and if they have a full quota of players this evening will give Summerhill their fill of it. Doubts over the participation of a few key players are floating about though with one in particular marked absent for the Summer League. If Cillian Lawlor can lock down McDonnell then an upset might be on the cards though the ‘Hill might be to difficult to conquer.

Verdict – Summerhill.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne v BYE.

Division 2A

Dunshaughlin v Kilbride (Venue – Dunshaughlin):  Kilbride will mount a challenge this evening but are likely to see their remaining two games as their best chances of victory.

Zac McGovern will pose problems for Dunshaughlin but the hosts are likely to win out with Furzey Blake to the fore. 

Verdict – Dunshaughlin.

Kilmainhamwood v Drumconrath/Meath Hill (Venue – Kilmainhamwood): A tasty local derby to get the Championship underway for these two and this one could be tastier than the juiciest of steaks….

Jack Fagan and Harry Corscadden were colleagues in the Meath full back line earlier this summer but will be in opposition this evening and if they come into direct opposition then the winner of this particular duel could set his team on the path to success.

Verdict – Draw.

Division 2B

St. Vincent’s/Curraha v St. Patrick’s (Venue – Curraha):  McDermott Park in Curraha is the venue for another local derby this evening and it pits two sides together who had contrasting fortunes in the Spring League. 

St. Vincent’s/Curraha won Division 3 while St. Patrick’s struggled in Division 2. 

Verdict – St. Vincent’s/Curraha.

St. Peter’s Dunboyne v Navan O’Mahonys – Postponed

Division 3A

Wolfe Tones v Bective/Dunsany (Venue – Kilberry):  Bective/Dunsany and Wolfe Tones both contested Division 4 in the Spring League with the Tones winning out overall. It’s hard to look past them again this evening.

Verdict – Wolfe Tones

Moynalty/Carnaross v Longwood/Clonard (Venue – Moynalty):  Home advantage might just be key in this one as there’s little to choose between the sides.

Division 3B

St. Michael’s/Nobber v Killary Emmets (Venue – Carlanstown):  There’s not much to split these two sides but playing in Carlanstown is probably worth a few points to St. Michael’s/Nobber so with that in mind they’ll probably have enough for Killary Emmets.

Verdict – Killary Emmets.

Walterstown v Ballinabrackey (Venue – Walterstown):  Ballinabrackey could well have a bit too much guile for the home side this evening.

Division 4A

Gaeil Colmcille v Clann na nGael/Ballivor (Venue – Grangegodden):  Experience of playing together in both League competitions so far this year can swing this one for the Kells youngsters.

Slane/St. Mary’s v St. Colmcilles (B) (Venue – Donore):  Much will depend on who St. Colmcilles have available but home advantage can swing it for Slane/St. Mary’s.

Division 4B

Ballinlough v Na Fianna (19:00, Venue – Kilskyre):  Buoyed by their recent Summer League final win over Betive/Dunsany, Ballinlough might have too much firepower for Na Fianna.

Dunderry v St. Peter’s Dunboyne (B) (Venue – Dunderry):  A repeat of the Division 5 final which was a brilliant encounter played in Dunganny. Dunderry came out on top that day and will fancy their chances of repeating the trick this evening on home ground.

Division 5

Inny Gaels v Blackhall Gaels (Venue – Ballinacree):  In the battle of the Gaels it’s Blackhall who are fancied to come out on top, narrowly.

Moynalvey/Boardsmill v Oldcastle (Venue – Moynalvey):  Oldcastle can make the long journey a fruitful one.
