June 17, 2019

Walterstown's Brian O'Connell

St Ultan’s 0-11  Walterstown 4-15

For the final round of the Division League Walterstown travelled to the opposite side to Navan town to take on St Ultan’s.

For Joe Treanor and Martin O’Connell, a win was imperative as they sought their charges to either confirm third place or depending on results elsewhere possibly clinch second spot. Neither side would be able to blame either the pitch or conditions as it was a fine Sunday morning on an immaculate pitch in Sean Newman Park.

In a tentative opening few minutes both sides exchanged wides before Walterstowns’ stalwart John Geoghegan registered the first scored of the game with a point three minutes in .Brian O’Connell was next to register a score as he raised the green flag with a well taken goal minutes later. Walterstowns next point was from Mark McCormack and was following up shortly afterwards by a well-executed point via the boot of Conor Farrelly. Walterstown were dominating the game now and indeed it was halfway through the first half before Ultan’s scored their first point. The blacks however responded immediately with Brian O’Connell scoring another goal and point to further extend their lead.

Half Time: St Ultan’s 0:03 Walterstown 2:06

At half time change saw Sam McCabe came on for David Reynolds for Walterstown.  Ultan’s scored the first point of the second period, but this was duly cancelled when Brian O Connell converted a free, and Robbie McDonnell’s left boot slotted over another point for Walterstown. Ultan’s misery continued when Robbie McDonnell was tripped in the square nine minutes into the half, and with regular penalty taker David Donnellan away in the land of the rising sun, the responsivity fell to Alban Crosbie to convert the penalty, which he calmly did. Minutes later Robbie McDonnell again showed a touch of class as he grabbed Walterstowns fourth goal.

The game was over at this stage, Ultan’s did scored the next three points however, as Walterstown made another change with Catahal McGuinness replacing the excellent Conor Farrelly. Barry O Connell, Alban Crosbie and Conor O Sullivan slotted over another 5 points between them. Subs Kevin Devine, Joey Coogan and Ciaran Murphy also entered the fray for Walterstown, and Joey slotted over Walterstown final point of the game before Pat Clarke drew an end to proceedings.

Full Time: St Ultan’s 0:11: Walterstown 4:15.

Joe and Martin will have been delighted with the performance form the boys, but with Ballinlough beating Castletown, the result meant Walterstown finished in third spot in the league and now face a playoff with neighbours Bective.
