B FL Div 1: Close encounter at McManus Park

May 21, 2019

Skryne's Felim O'Rourke

Skryne 1-11 Simonstown 0-10

Skryne and Simonstown produced a close encounter played in ideal conditions in McManus Park Skryne tonight (Monday) in this B League Division 1 clash.

There was very little between the two sides and the small attendance were treated to some lovely football with excellent well taken points from both teams. In the end, what proved to be the deciding score came after 13 minutes when Paddy Carpenter crashed the ball to the Simonstown net for the only goal of the game. The Navan side had started brightly and were leading by four points to two when Carpenter struck for that all important goal. He had a chance earlier in the game to get on the scoresheet but his effort went narrowly wide of Gary Lynchs goal. Craig Nolan had got Skryne off the mark with the first of his four points from play as early as the fourth minute of the game while Dermot Brennan came all the way up from his fullback position to fist the last score of the half to leave the Blues leading at half time on a scoreline of – Skryne 1-4 Simonstown 0-5.

The second half took on the same pattern as the first, with Skryne outscoring their opponents by seven points to five. The game was played in a very sporting manner and posed no problems for Referee Eamon Barry who allowed the match flow which added to the entertainment value.

In an all round good team performance from Skryne, Felim O’Rourke kept a clean sheet in goals and he had a strong defence in front of him, well marshalled by Dermot Brennan, Andrew Moore and Darren Fox who were particularly prominent. Aidan Tuite and Colm Craigie – until he tired – were on top in midfield. Upfront the Carpenter brothers, Paddy and Tommy, and Craig Nolan certainly caught the eye even though all six plus the replacements played their part in this victory.

Skryne – Felim O’Rourke. Jack Dardis, Dermot Brennan (0-1), Andrew Moore. Darren Fox, Mark Harrington, Keith Donoghue. Aidan Tuite, Colm Craigie. Ciaran Finnerty, David McGoldrick (0-1), Tommy Carpenter (0-1). Craig Nolan (0-4), Paddy Carpenter (1-1), Neal Burke (0-2).

Subs used – Sean Cassidy (0-1), Jason Fox, Paul McGoldrick.
