'Have Dublin come back a little bit?'

Meath legend Trevor Giles is hopeful for a competitive Leinster SFC this year following Dublin's indifferent Allianz League campaign.

The five-in-a-row chasing Dubs have been miles ahead of the rest in Leinster in recent years, but three defeats in the Allianz League would suggest they've lost some of their aura of invincibility.

"People in Meath are wondering, 'Have Dublin come back a little bit?' Maybe other teams have moved on. We just haven't seen that in other years, Dublin losing three league games," Giles said at the launch of the 2019 Beko Club Bua programme in Croke Park yesterday.

"Look at Con O'Callaghan losing a Sigerson semi-final, look at Paul Mannion and Cian O'Sullivan losing a Leinster club final. So some Dublin players are starting to experience defeat.

"Maybe they're human after all! Then it may fuel them too. Those are just things that didn't happen in other years. I think the general public are excited with the championship this year."

Giles is in no doubt that his beloved Meath are heading in the right direction after achieving promotion to Division 1 for the first time in 13 years.

“Getting to Division 1 in the league for next year is a massive thing,” he stressed.

“It is massive because crowds were good for the latter stages of the league for Meath. I got the train up for the Division 2 final here against Donegal, it was packed.

“So there is a lot more interest now in the county, kids are bringing a ball along to the matches to get out at half-time at Pairc Tailteann to play. There is a good positive feeling around Meath. That has to be good.”
