HL Div 1: Kildalkey remain in pole position

March 18, 2019

A goal for Kildalkey's Derek Doran against Kilmessan

Kilmessan 0-12 Kildalkey 1-14

Heavy rain over the weekend threatened this Division 1 HL fixture but despite all the rain it went ahead on a cold but sunny St Patrick’s Day.

Both teams were without some of their regular players but those who played gave their all on the day .

Sean Heavey’s point got the ball rolling for Kildalkey and was followed up with a Conor Kearney free Nicky Potterton got a fine point before Kearney hit 4 frees in a row and Evan Fitzgerald got a point before halftime to leave it tied 0-8 a piece

With both sets of backs on top but Kilmessans Steven Clynch was proving a constant thorn in Kildalkey’s side being in the right place all the time and clearing numerous balls as well as hitting 3 long range frees as Kildalkey struggled to deal with him.

It was Kilmessan who made the better start to the second half hitting the first 3 points to lead by 0-11 to 0-8 but Kearney was on target from play with a great point from well out the field along with another free to close the score to one 0-12 to 0-11 then Derek Doran finished to the net after a brilliant run by Nicky Potterton who took on the Kilmessan defence and laid off the pass and Ducksy finished a rasper to leave Kildalkey ahead by 1-11 to 0-12 and Nicky

Potterton finished out the game with the last 3 points 1 from play and 2 frees to seal the win in what was a hard fought battle as always with these two teams.

Brin Kelly  David Harmon and Brendan McKeon were solid in the full back line as was the half backs who never gave an inch

Conor Kearney worked hard around the midfield area and Kevin McKeon and Joey Keena had some battle with each other and McKeon cut out numerous Kilmessan attacks and set up his team for scores and can be happy with his display .

While it wasn’t a day for open hurling up front Nicky Potterton and Derek Doran still caused problems and had good moments and veteran Sean Heavey showed all his experience and led the attack as Kildalkey gained 2 more points and are now 3 from 3 in Division 1HL.

Best for Kilmessan were Stephen Clynch,  Eoin Jack Keoghan, Padraic Burke
