Meath's James Toher

New Meath senior hurling manager Nick Fitzgerald brought his charges to Bray last Sunday morning for a challenge against Wicklow as he continues to work on a squad for the new season ahead.

James Toher, who opted for the county footballers during this years championship made his first start under the new manager. The Trim clubman, who captained Meath to their Christy Ring Cup success in 2016, was in fine form hitting eight points, five from play, as Meath finished well to forge a 2-20 to 3-14 win.

Some defensive errors let the Garden County in for two early goals and Wicklow led 2-7 to 0-10 at the break. With ten minutes remaining the home side still held a three point lead 3-8 to 0-14 but from there on it was all Meath and goals from Mikey Cullen and Josh Wall gave the Royals victory.

Meath scorers: James Toher 0-8, Mikey Cullen 1-1, Josh Wall 1-0, Jack Walsh 0-3, Anthony Healy, Eoin Marsh and Keith Keogan 0-2 each, Adam Gannon and Michael O'Grady 0-1 each.

Meath: Paul Fagan, Seanie Geraghty, Shane Brennan, Jonathan McCloskey, Niall Weir, Damien Healy, Eoin Marsh, Sean Quigley, Keith Keogan, James Toher, Colm O'Mealoid, Jack Walsh, Michael O'Grady, Peter Farrell, Conor Kearney. Subs: Mikey Cullen, Anthony Healy, Adam Gannon.

Meath take on Antrim in the opening round of the Walsh Cup on December 30th.
