Murphy, Enda

April 01, 2008
The Late Enda Murphy Ballyhaunis is in mourning this week following the passing of the well-known Enda Murphy. A native of Kells in Co Meath, Mr Murphy moved to the East Mayo town in 1982, and opened Murphy's Arms Bar, which he operated on Bridge Street until 1988. As well as being a popular publican, Enda was involved in a pIethora of community organisations, including Ballyhaunis Tidy Towns, of which he was chairperson up to the time of his death. Sadly he will not be around to collect Ballyhaunis' latest award for its achievement of being named County Street League Winners 2008. Mr Murphy was also a member of Ballyhaunis Community Council and was on the Abbey Pattern Partnership. He was the founding member of the Neighbourhood Watch in the town and a former chairperson of the organisation. The genial Mr Murphy also had contact with many other voluntary organisations in the town in his role as caretaker of Ballyhaunis parochial hall. In his youth in Meath, Enda won a Junior All-lreland club medal and was a passionate follower of his beloved Royal County. A stauch Catholic and regular church-goer, there was a huge attendance at the removal of Mr Murphy's remains with a guard of honour drawn from the entire community leading the hearse to St Patrick's Parish Church for requiem Mass. Mr Murphy was laid to rest in the new cemetery in Ballyhaunis. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Kathleen; sons Bernard and Enda; daughter Deirdre; son-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters, brothers, grandchildren, neighbours and friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Courtesy of the Western People 1 April 2008
