Langan, Seamus

January 08, 2008
The Late Seamus Langan The death has taken place unexpectedly of Mr Séamus Langan, 6 Fr Angelus Park, Westport, one of the community's best known figures. A native of Mayneen, Aughagower, he was son of the late Ned and Bridget Langan was aged 86 years. In his working life Séamus was a truck driver with the firm Cox, Walkin & Cox, Westport, for a number of years. He later joined the staff of Westport Urban District Council as a collector of rents, rates and annuities. He continued in this job right up to retirement and was frequently commended for the high annual returns he had in his work. Séamus and his wife Mary experienced great sadness in their lives in 1992 when their daughter and only child, Noreen Geraghty passed away. They bore their tragic loss with grace and dignity and cherished their grandchildren in the years that followed. Séamus will always be fondly remembered for his total dedication to his wife and for his good neighbourliness, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Séamus hailed from a strong GAA family and was himself a footballer of no mean repute in his youth. He followed the fortunes of the Mayo senior team with great enthusiasm and vividly recalled the county's winning of All-Ireland honours in 1936, 1950, and 1951. Like all genuine GAA followers he longed for the return of the Sam Maguire Cup to his native county, but he was not to know that it wouldn't happen again in his lifetime. Throughout his adult life Séamus had a great interest in current affairs, especially politics, and he was very proud of his political allegiance to Fine Gael. He will be sadly missed by his wife mary (nee Lehane), brothers Eamonn (Mayneen) and Tommy (Co. Carlow), grandchildren Sandra Daly (Chicago), Denise Coakley (Chicago), Tommy Geraghty (Chicago), Pat Geraghty (Ballyvary), son-in-law Tommy Joe Geraghty (Ballyvary), nieces, nephews, other relatives, neighbours and many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Fr Christy Langan and his sisters Madeline Fitzgerald, Kilmeena and Cornelia Langan, who died in infancy. A representative cortege accompanied Séamus's removal from Navin's Funeral Home, Westport, to St Mary's Church, Westport where Fr Francis Mitchell officiated at the reception ceremony. Fr Mitchell was the principal concelebrated of the Funeral Mass in which members of Séamus's extended family read the lessons and prayers of the faithful and brought the offertory gifts to the altar. St Mary's Church Choir was conducted by Mr Gabriel Kelly. Séamus was laid to rest in Aughagower Cemetery. May his soul have peaceful rest. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. Funeral arrangements were by Moran Funeral Directors, Aughagower and Westport. Courtesy of the Mayo News 8/1/ 2008
