March 07, 2007The death took place suddenly in London of Josie Geraghty, Myna, Kilmeena, Westport.
A member of a well-known and highly regarded Kilmeena family, Josie was son of the late Petie and Mary Geraghty and was aged 68 years.
From an early age Josie was involved in the construction business. Among the projects he helped to build as a member of the construction team of Cox Walkin & Cox were the Westport Textiles Factory, now Northern Feather, and new churches in Kilmeena and Fahy.
He then emigrated to London where he continued to be involved in the building industry.
Josie was very poor and well liked by his work colleagues and building industry chiefs in London. The later recognised him as a multi-skilled craftsman with immense building experience.
He never lost his love of his native place and often recounted happy days as a member of the Kilmeena GAA team in the sixties. Throughout his life he was always very supportive of Mayo football teams and Irish sport in general.
His removal took place from London to Ireland West Airport, Knock, and, from there, to St Brendan's Church Myna, where Fr Jim Walsh, PP Kilmeena, officiated at the reception ceremony.
Fr Walsh tendered sympathy to the Geraghty family on their sad loss. He said Josie would be fondly remembered in his native community for all the right reasons and his loss would be greatly felt.
Josie will be sadly missed by his brothers Sean, Mick, Brendan and Christy, sisters Bea Moran, Sr Margaret and Eileen, extended family, relatives and many friends.
He was laid to rest with his parents in the family ploy in Myna Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Funeral arrangements were be McGing's Undertakers, Westport.
