The late Patricia Flanagan
The death took place on New Year's Day of Pat (Patricia) Flanagan, Galway and Ballaghaderreen.
She was wife of the late Sean Flanagan, who captained Mayo to All-Ireland glory in 1950 and '51 and who later went on to serve as a TD for Mayo and an MEP for the Connact-Ulster constituency
Pat died peacefully in the kind care of the staff of the Pointe Boise Nursing Home in Salthill where she had spent the last few months.
Formerly Patricia Doherty, her father was a bank manger in Ballyhaunis in the early 1940's. The family later moved to Naas in County Kildare.
A noted golfer, Pat enjoyed many days on the golf courses where she had numerous friends. She was an avid follower of Gaelic games and, like Sean, was delighted to see their son Dermot sport the Mayo jersey. News of her passing was received with regret by the many friends of the Flanagan family throughout the region and much further afield.
Removal took place to Christ the King Church in Salthill on Friday evening and to St Nathy's Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen on Saturday for the celebration of Requiem Mass at 2 pm. Fr Leo Henry from St Nathy's College was the chief celebrant and he was joined by a number of other priests. Also present was Bishop Thomas Flynn. The burial took place in Kilcolman Cemetery.
She is deeply regretted by her sons John and Dermot, daughters Sheila, Clare, Barbara, Joy and Mary, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, relatives neighbours and friends.
