The late Joe Jordan The death of Joe Jordan, Gortnagoyne, Garrafrauns evoked much sadness in the locality. Joe was 74 and had been in declining health for the past five years. Joe commanded the height of respect throughout the Garrafrauns and neighbouring regions of Irishtown, Cloonfad and Dunmore. He was a plasterer by trade and was a man who worked hard over the years, always delighting in a job well done. His work took him to many parts of the country down through the years. A talented footballer in his younger days, Joe won a Galway Junior championship medal with the local Carrentryla Slashers back in 1955 when they defeated the ESB team in the county final. He was blessed with a fine memory especially when it came to sporting matters. He excelled in recalling facts and statistics in relation to G.A.A., especially Connacht championships and All-Ireland finals while he was also well-versed in the history of the Grand Nationals and Cheltenham winners. Joe enjoyed his regular social occasions and Lally's Pub in Garrafrauns was where he most often 'held counsel'. He loved the banter with the locals and the mix of people from Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, especially during the summer months when the championship was in full swing. Many were the great night's entertainment he enjoyed with his loyal friends in Lally's. Joe was a real gentleman and he made a valuable contribution to the community life of his region over the decades. He will be remembered with much fondness by his family and many friends. Removal took place from Glynn's Funeral Home in Dunmore to Garrafrauns Church with burial in Addergoole cemetery after Requiem Mass. He is survived by his wife Nora, daughters Ann Browne (Ballyglunin), Marion Ennaque (Galway) and Kathleen (Gortnagoyne), son Tony (Maree, Oranmore), Michael (Claregalway), Paschal (Craughwell), Sean (Ennis), Brendan (Gortnagoyne) and Billy (Gortnagoyne), sister Madie Molloy (Gortnagoyne), in-laws, grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends, in-law Frank, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
