McLoughlin, Marion

The late Marion McLoughlin Marion McLoughlin, Ballinphoill, Claremorris, who died was cherished and greatly liked member of the local community in the Claremorris region. Formerly Foote from Tullinacurra, Swinford, Marion married Michael McLoughlin (who has been a member of the teaching staff at Davitt College, Castlebar for many years) from D'Alton Street, Claremorris whose family had a long association with the drapery business in the town. They raised a family of two children, Rowena and Sean. Marion's easy and gentle manner endeared her to all and she had a great love for Claremorris and its people. Helping out Tom and Monica in the drapery store after she moved to Claremorris, she got to know many people from the town and hinterland. She and Michael moved to Ballinphoill in the late 1970s and she loved the place and Lough Lannagh from the outset. As the children moved through the education cycle, Marion became closely associated with the local schools and served on the Parents Council at Barnacarroll National School for some years as well as secretary of the Ct Colman's Playschool Group. She was also a member of the Parents Association at Mount St Michael Secondary School and always made a valuable input into all the communities. She took a very keen interest in the various ventures and hobbies undertaken by Rownea and Sean in the schools and was a great supporter of the Carnacarroll teams in the he Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic football events as well as the annual county sports quiz with which Barnacarroll have been synonymous for several years. In more recent times, her keen interest in sport saw her become part of the management team with Knock United U14 squad. She loved to see the young people enjoying themselves and had a firm belief that all sporting activities enriched those who took part in them. Over the years, she followed the various swings of Mayo football and was a regular at the intercounty championships. In her own quiet way, she loved to support the home county and delighted when they achieved success. For ten years or so, Marion conducted and supervised the regular series of Easy Slim classes in Claremorris. Through these classes, she established tremendous rapport with many ladies from the region and was on first name terms with so many people. Another area of interest to Marion was the game of bridge. She was a member of the Kilcolman Bridge Club and loved the social side of the weekly get-together, meeting people and sharing in the lively conversations before and after the tournaments. Walking was a favourite and their faithful dog could often be seen out and around the area as they headed off for their regular strolls which took them round Ballinasmalla. Meeting and chatting to neighbours along the way was a natural part of the journey. If Marion had a special fondness for the people of Claremorris region, the same could be said in return. All who ever knew her had a special liking for her. She was so gracious and full of good nature. It was a privilege to have known Marion and we will remember her with the kindest thoughts. The large attendances at the funeral ceremonies were indeed reflective of the special regard in which Marion was held by so many people. The sadness felt at her passing was palpable as friends conveyed their sympathy to Michael and the family on their great loss. Removal was from St Colman's Funeral Home to Claremorris Church burial in St Colman's Cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Peter Gannon. Marion, who was predeceased by her father Martin and brother Peter, is deeply regretted by her husband Michael, daughter Rowena and son Sean, her mother Mary Teresa, sisters Ann, Margaret, Kathleen, Winnie and Patricia, brother Tommy, father-in-law Tom, in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
