Death of Dr Vinny Loftus
The death has occurred, after a short illness, of Dr. Vinny Loftus, Gurteens, Ballina who was one of the best known medical practitioners in the North Mayo area.
The late Dr. Vinny was an extremely popular individual in the Crossmolina, Ballina and Lahardane communities where he served extremely diligently as a medical doctor during a long career.
He was educated at Crossmolina NS., St. Muredach's College and U.C.D. where he qualified in 1952. He worked for a time in the National Maternity Hospital, in Galway and Mayo General Hospital before going to Roscommon where he practiced for a short time.
After this he was general practitioner in Lahardane for fifteen years and later practiced for twenty years in Ballina. He retired five years ago.
An outstanding sportsman in his youth, he played on the St. Muredach's College senior team when he was only a newcomer to the college. He won a junior championship medal with Crossmolina in 1947 and was a member of the senior team that won the first championship title for the Club in 1949.
He was the eldest of a Crossmolina family that had given outstanding service to the community in medicine and community involvement.
He is survived by his wife Dr. Angela, and by Enda and Angela, both doctors, Fr John, Donal, Emer and Noel.
