The Late Frank Ruane The death took place at his residence on Friday July 4th after a short illness, of Frank Ruane, Carrandine. Frank, who was in his mid 80s, was a very well known farmer and businessman and news of his death was greeted with sadness and regret by all his many friends around the area. A very hardworking man Frank operated his own wholesale footwear business from Main St. Kiltimagh up and was well known all over Connacht and indeed further afield. Frank took a keen interest in sport all his life and was very active with both the local GAA and Soccer Clubs. He was an ardent follower of the Mayo team and attended their games all over Connacht and in Croke Park. As a young man he was a member of the very successful Kiltimagh team that won several county titles and he also donned the green and red of Mayo. In the late 50s and early 60s he was chairman of a committee that was set up to provide proper sporting facilities in the parish and they raised substantial finance at the time which later handed over to the GAA Club and which went towards the development of Gilmartin Park. Some years ago Frank was honoured by the Club when he was presented with the Hall of Fame award. He was also very active with the local Soccer Club for many years and his involvement was recognised by the Mayo Association Football League from which he also received an award. Another of Frank's great interests was politics at local, national and international level. An ardent member of the Fine Gael Party all through his life he went forward for election to Mayo County Council some years ago and at the time of his death was President of the local Cumann. He was also a hardworking member of the local Town Improvement Committee and of Muintir na Tire for many years. The esteem in which Frank was held was evidenced by the huge and representative attendance at the funeral ceremonies on both days. Removal took place from his home to the Church of the Holy Family on Sunday evening July 6th and he was laid to rest in Kilkinure Cemetery after Mass on Monday which was concelebrated by Fr Paddy Kilcoyne, P.P., Kiltimagh, Fr John Durkan, C.C., Kiltimagh, Fr Pat Lynch, P.P., Tubbercurry and Fr Austin Fergus, P.P., Mayo Abbey. He is survived by his wife Noreen, daughter Regina Maloney ( Claremorris), sons Frankie, Louis and Terence (Dublin), Adrian (Athlone), Pat (Tralee), Raymond (Mayo Abbey), Paul (London), Trevor (Westport), son-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, relatives and many friends.
