The Late Tony Jennings The death has taken place of Mr Tony (Anthony) Jennings, Kilmaine Rd., Ballinrobe. Deceased who was in his seventies, had been ill for some time. One of the best known figures in the area, Tony was attached to the staff of An Post for 47 years. He began his working career in Claremorris, and later moved to his native Ballinrobe, where he eventually became Postmaster, a post he retired from ten years ago. His dealings with the public were always characterised by kindness and consideration and his passing was widely lamented. A passionate community activist, Tony championed Ballinrobe's concerns at every available opportunity, mainly through his role as secretary of Ballinrobe's Development Company for many years. He was also Secretary of Ballinrobe Town Hall Committee and gave his fullest support to the neighbourhood watch concept. A noted Gaelic footballer in his youngest days, he won a County Junior Medal as a corner back with Ballinrobe in 1958 and two O'Mara Cup medals. On his retirement, he became actively associated with the club in an administrative capacity, serving as its diligent Secretary for a lengthy span. He also became Secretary of the South Mayo Board for a period. His remains were removed from St. Joseph's Funeral Home to St Mary's Church, Ballinrobe and members of An Post, Ballinrobe GAA Club and representatives of bodies Tony served on, formed a Guard of Honour. The burial took place in the New Cemetery after concelebrated Requiem Mass and Right-Rev Monsignor Thomas Shannon, PP, the Chief Celebrant was assisted by Fr Pat O'Toole, Fr Peter Walsh and Fr Gerry French. Tony is mourned by his wife, Lily, a native of Caltra, daughter Anne, sons Colm and Peter, daughter-in-law, Emma; brother, Willie; sister, Kathleen, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces.
