Derry secretary Danny Scullion says the county's dual stars should look to Mayo's Keith Higgins as the perfect example to achieve balance between both codes.

In his report to the annual county convention, Scullion stated that Derry's hurlers "could be the best in the province" and asked the clubs to give their backing to county teams next season as new senior boss Collie McGurk looks to get the Oak Leafers over the 2016 campaign which saw them without a win.

"I would ask that all our clubs get behind our county hurling teams," Scullion told the convention.

"There is no doubt that Derry hurling could be the best in the province if there was greater co-operation and a common sense approach where players are put centre stage.

"It is not an easy task to achieve a balance but where there is a will a way can often be found. One only has to look at the example of Mayo's Keith Higgins who played in the majority of Mayo's Nicky Rackard Cup games and also in the All-Ireland senior football final."
