Ballinrobe GAA man Christy O'Loughlin dies

Sadness enveloped Ballinrobe and south Mayo yesterday (Monday) as news spread of the death of well-known community man, Christy O'Loughlin.
A native of Corrofin, County Clare, Christy lived on the Kilmaine Road, just outside the town for over 40 years, having moved to the area in 1970. He passed away on Sunday night, aged 83 years, following an illness.

Christy was vice chairman of the Ballinrobe club for some time. His love of his adopted town and club saw him attend nearly every GAA match involving Ballinrobe over 30 years. He was also a supporter of the local hurling Club, having played in his youth.

Christy had a great love of fishing and was chairman of the Ballinrobe and District Anglers Association as well as chairman of the World Cup Fly Fishing competition on Lough Mask each year. The hosting of the Agriculture Show was always a big event for Christy and be served as president for the past number of years.

Christy and his wife Anna moved to the Kilmaine Road after he took up the position of Farm Manager at the Agricultural Institute at Creagh (now Teagasc). Here, they raised their family.
Chairman of Ballinrobe GAA Club, Alan Flannery, said: "He was a life-long supporter of the GAA and was very involved in community life in the town. Christy, his wife Anna, and their family, played a major role in the club. Their sons played football for many years and Christy was a vital member of the committee. We extend our sympathy to Anna, his five sons and daughter on their loss. He will be sadly missed."
Christy is survived by his wife Anna, sons James, PJ, Brendan, Declan and Fergal, daughter Evelyn and extended family and friends.

His remains will repose at his residence at Kilmaine Road this evening (Tuesday) from 5pm to 8pm. Private removal takes place on Wednesday morning to St Mary's Church, Ballinrobe for Funeral Mass at 12noon followed by burial in the new cemetery
