January 31, 2012
Large crowds bade farewell to one of the Tourmakeady's emigrants of the sixties last weekend in Tourmakeady. On Sunday, January 15, 2012, the death took place suddenly and peacefully of Micahel T lally in Chicago, USA, son of the late Johnny and Mame Lally. Tawnagh, Srah, Tourmakeady.
Michael T emigrated to England in 1966 with three of his friends, all of whom had played in the Tourmakeady newly formed GAA team. But similar to the present day, lack of employment forced them to take the boat to England, four years later Michael T took the longer trip to Chicago and there he stayed until his final trip home on Friday, January 19. He never lost touch with his home. He loved to hear the happenings of Tourmakeady and Mayo by it farming, football or community affairs.
He was a great family man although he never married. He adopted all of his nieces and nephews as his own. He had so many friends and this was evident at the huge crowd that attended both wakes and Funeral Masses on both sides of the Atlantic.
On Friday January 20. GAA players assembled from 1965 to the present team to form a guard of honour as Michael T Lally's casket was moved to St Mary's Church, Tourmakeady. Burial took place on Saturday following concelebrated Mass by Fr John Kenny PP Ballyovey assisted by Fr Desmond Grogan. Readings were given by Siobhán and Michael Lally, niece and nephew of Michael T, Requiemal Hymns were played and sung by The Morrin and Byrne family. An emotional reflection on Michael T's life was given by Julie Lally, sister-in-law. She paid tribute especially to Gabriel Hosty, formerly of Claremorris, a good friend to Michael who travelled home with the remains.
Micheal T has departed this life with one of two wishes he adhered to all his life which were to rest finally in his beloved Tourmakeady and his other long time wish was not to be- to see Mayo life the Sam Maguire. He is survived by his sister Bridie and brother Frank both Tawnagh, Srah, Tourmakeady; Martin, Seán and Joe, all Chicago; his aunt Bridgie Lally, Derra, Srah; Sisters-in-law Julie Lally, Tawnagh and Connie, Cathy and Julie Lally, all Chicago, also nieces, nephews and a large circle of cousins as well and neighbours and friends.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
