Shock after death of popular Charlestown man

Profound shock and sadness swept through the Charlestown and Swinford areas last week with the news of the death of Peter Rushe (67) from Barnacoogue. He died from injuries sustained in a two-car accident at Barrack Street, Charlestown, on Wednesday night.
Mr Rushe received excellent medical attention from the emergency services at the scene of the accident and spoke to those attending the scene. However, he took ill and died while being taken by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.
It is understood that the driver and passenger of the other car involved in the accident ran from the scene. Gardai are carrying out a major investigation in the aftermath of the accident.
Peter was a farmer in his home village of Barnacoogue near Knock Airport. The local national school is located on lands formerly owned by the Rushe family. He was one of a family of six, five brothers and a sister, and he ran the family farm for many years.
A renowned GAA follower, Peter attended all Mayo's home league matches and looked forward with renewed enthusiasm every summer to the championship. He travelled to support Mayo at venues all over the province and further afield since the new format was introduced around ten years ago. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of Charlestown and was present to see them win the county title some months ago. He was a regular participant in darts games, especially in former times when the village leagues were popular in the area.
Peter also took a keen interest in current affairs and was well versed in matters relating to Irish politics. He loved the buzz and excitement of local and general election campaigns.
The large attendance at the funeral ceremonies on Friday and Saturday reflected the affection and esteem in which Peter was held by so many people. Removal was from Boland's Funeral Home in Swinford to Charlestown Church where members of Charlestown GAA Club, together with neighbours, formed a large guard of honour as the cortege arrived at the church. Interment took place in Brushfield Cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr John Doherty, Fr Farrell Cawley and Fr Steven Farragher assisted. Children from Barnacoogue NS formed a guard of honour after the funeral Mass on Saturday morning.
Peter is survived by his brothers, Joe (Tuam), Tom (Coventry), Christy (Ennis) and Kevin (Sligo); sister, Mary (Tuam); in-laws; nephews and nieces; relatives, neighbours and friends.
Anyone who may have information about the car crash that led to Peter Rushe's death is asked to contact the Gardai.
