Patrick Moran
Roscahill East, Kilmeena, Westport
The death took place in the MacBride Community Nursing Unit, Westport, on Friday, February 4, 2010, of Mr Patrick (Paddy) Moran, Roscahill East, Kilmeena, Westport.
Popularly known as Paddy, he was son of the late Thomas and Margaret Moran and was aged 88 years. He was a retired member of the local farming community and also worked in England for a number of years in the 1940's.
Paddy was an avid follower of Kilmeena and Mayo GAA teams. He was always in his element when the fortunes of the Kilmeena GAA teams were in the ascendant. He was old enough to remember Mayo's All-Ireland victories in 1936, 1950 and 1951 and longed for the past 59 years for the Sam Maguire to make a return journey to his beloved Mayo. Alas it was not to be.
He had a great love of nature and its wonderful creations and his own flower garden at Roscahill East was testament to this. He tended it with loving care year in and year out.
Paddy, who was unmarried, is mourned by his sister, Bridie Apfel (New York); brother-in-law, Werner Apfel; sister-in-law, Peggy; nieces and nephews; cousins; neighbour and friends.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank (Cleveland, USA) and Michael Joseph (New York), and his sister Mai Walsh (Headford).
Paddy's sister and family paid tribute to Matron Rita O'Boyle and the nursing and caring staff of MacBrides CNU for their care of Paddy and the help and comfort they gave him in the last few weeks of his life. They also expressed their gratitude to his home help Rita Tagg, Dr Tom O'Malley at Mayo General Hospital, Dr Barbara Jordan and Kilmeena Church Choir, Mass servers and grave diggers, all who sympathised with them, travelled long distances to the funeral or helped in any way.
Removal was from McGing's Funeral Home, Westport, to St Brendan's Church. Myna. Kilmeena, where Fr Michael Mannion officiated at the reception ceremony in the unavoidable absence of Fr Jim Walsh, Parish Priest.
Many people turned up at the Funeral Home and Requiem Mass to pay their respects to a friend and neighbour who was held in the highest regard by all of them. They gave sympathy to his sister and extended family.
Fr Mannion was the chief celebrant of Paddy's Funeral Mass. Burial took place in Kilmeena Old Cemetery.
May Paddy's noble soul have peaceful rest.
