The Late Michael Morley
Michael Morley, who died recently in Swinford hospital, was a native of Cloonfaughna, Knock. He spent almost all his working life in England, shared between years in Birmingham and London. Michael (76) was a brother of the late Eileen Carty of Knock.
He was one of a family of eight born to Michael and Jane Morley. He attended Loughanamon National School and emigrated to England at a young age. Most of his working life he spent in the construction business and he was renowned as a top class plasterer.
Micheal spared no effort in teaching the trade to many young people. He helped several from his home area who went to look for work in Birmingham and London and was noted for his kind manner and generous spirit.
He had a great fondness for Irish culture and kept close ties with the Irish clubs and groups in the areas of England in which he worked and lived down the years.
The music and games were part of his life. He had a deep love of Gaelic games and collected many programmes and memorabilia from around the country. When visiting in Cork or Kerry or other places, he would always try and call to the well known GAA pubs and those owned by former legends of the sport. His knowledge of the games was countrywide and he retained that interest to the end.
He and his wife Josie, a native of Kerry, moved home to Ireland around ten years ago and came to reside in Churchfield Park, Knock. Josie died back in 2005. He was pleased to renew old friendships and make fresh ones. The regular card games in Knock and Brickens proved a popular social outlet for Michael each week. He made many friends through these sessions.
The deep bonds of friendship established by Michael during his years in England manifested themselves in a remarkable way at his funeral.
One man left Sneem in Co Kerry in the early hours of the morning to be present in Knock for Michael's funeral Mass. Another old friend from his days in England took a bus from Kildare to Knock.
Removal took place from the home of his nephew John Carty and wife Kathleen to Knock Church with interment in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Msgr Joe Quinn who was assisted by Fr Michael Murphy, PP, Roundfort.
He is survived by his brother John, in Co. Meath, and his nephews and nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
