The Late Tommie Gavin
The death took place on Wednesday, December 9, in his 87th year, of Mr Tommie Gavin, Treenlaur, Tourmakeady, following a brief illness. Tommie was well known as a hard working man in the Tourmakeady area, especially in and around Colaiste Mhuire, where he spend the major part of his active live, when farming was a big part of the school when it housed borders.
A native of Belcarra, Tommie married Bella native Noreen Maher in the mid-1950s, and they settled in Treenlaur over looking the lovely Lough Mask. He was a multi-talented man and worked in various capacities, including dance hall manager, band leader, taxi man and driving instructor.
Tommie loved music and often obliged at short notice to play in the local hall or St Mary's Church. His airs will live on for many years, especially at Easter and Christmas night. A beautiful reminder of this was given at Tommie's funeral Mass by his grandson. Tommie could play many instruments with great style.
He had a great interest in the political world and loved all types of sports, with all his sons wearing the black and white of Tourmakeady, and some the green and red of Mayo.
Large crowds turned out to say farewell to a great friend and give support to his wife Noreen and family. His remains were removed from St.Mary's Funeral Home, Tourmakeady, to the local church, where they were received by Fr Padraig Standúin, CC Tourmakeady. His funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Standúin, assisted by Cannon Desmond Grogan, Partry. Readings and hymns were given in a meaningful and beautiful way by his grandchildren and other family members.
Tommie is survived by his wife, Noreen; daughters, Ann and Dolores; sons Adrian, Paul, Tomas and Diarmuid; sons-in-law, Brian English and John Doyle; daughters-in-law, Mary Joe,Martina, Patricia, Helen and Deirdre; sister, Nellie (Cork); grandchildren and extended family.
May his soul rest in peace.
