October 07, 2008
The death took place at his residence on Tuesday, September 23, of John Langan, The Farm, Ballinrobe. John, who was in his 102nd year was predeceased by his wife Mary and son Dick. Highly regarded in the community, John spent his long life farming and was always supportive of his neighbours when the occasion arose. The celebration of his 100th birthday was a special family event and the late Monsignor Thomas Shannon, PP, conveyed the congratulations and good wishes of President Mary McAleese to John. An imposing figure, John was a noted footballer in his youth and led Ballinrobe to victory over Westport Quay, in the county junior championship final in 1934. He occupied the full forward berth and was the only surviving member of that side. As well as donning the Ballinrobe colours, John, travelling by bicycle, represented the club at meetings in Castlebar and his contribution was fitingly acknowledged in 19987, when he was the recipient of the Hall of Fame award. His 100th birthday was also marked by the presentation of a scroll by Michael Coyne, the club's president. His remains were removed from St Joseph's Funeral Home to St. Mary's Church, Ballinrobe and members of the GAA Club formed a guard of honour. The burial took place in the New Cemetery after Requiem Mass on Friday September 26. CanonConal Eustace PP was assisted by Fr Martin Costello, SMA and the large and representative attendances on both days testified to the high esteem in which John was held. He is mourned by his four sons, Martin, Sean, Paddy (Boston) and Seamus (Ennis), two daughters Kathleen, New Zealand and Mary, Australia, daughters in law, sons in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephew and niece. - Western People, 7th October 2008
