The death has taken place at his residence of Tom Rochford, Mulranny Road, Newport. The deceased who was in his 68th year had been unwell for some time. A native of High Street, Ballinrobe, Tom was a son of the late JJ and Kitty Rochford and his football talent first manifested itself while attending Ballinrobe CBS.
He captained the Mayo minor side defeated by Dublin in the 1958 All-Ireland final and won a county junior medal with Ballinrobe in the same year. He continued to follow the fortunes of Mayo teams and was also an active member of Mulranny Golf Club.
A member of the Garda Siochana, he served in Crossmolina and was Sergeant in Newport at the time of his retirement. He continued to live in Newport, where he was held in very high regard, and was a founder member of Newport Folk Choir.
His remains were removed from his residence to St Patrick's Church, Newport, and the burial took place in Burrishoole Cemetery after Requiem Mass on Monday, August 4. There were large and representatives on both days including many people from Ballinrobe.
Tom is mourned by his wife Celine, daughters Paula, Maura, Celia and Jenny, brother John, Bray Co. Wicklow, sons-in-law, grandchildren and nephews.
