Aidan Dempsey mourned
Family, friends, neighbours, priests and footballers thronged the Church of Christ the King, Knockmore on Friday evening last for the funeral of the late Aidan Dempsey, Stonehall, Foxford and again for the 11am Requiem Mass on Saturday and burial afterwards in Ballinahaglish Cemetery.
Members of Knockmore GAA club formed a guard of honour at the removal of his remains from his home on the Friday evening. They joined the large attendance which included GAA members from local and county clubs.
The large attendance were there to pay their last respects to a much loved, father, grandfather, brother, neighbour and friend.
Aidan was a wonderful father to his family of four and never more so than after the tragic death of his beloved wife Tessie, which occurred in the early nineties. He supported and encouraged them through all their different careers in life. He was there for their special occasions - weddings, christenings of his grandchildren and all their special days. He loved his grandchildren and they in turn adored their grandfather. Aidan too was a great brother, neighbour ever helpful in a time of need.
He was a great craftsman and evidence of his work can be seen in the perfect finish to his plastering and carpentry work.
Perhaps Aidan will be best known as father, supporter and follower of two of Knockmores most famous club and county footballers, Raymond and Declan Dempsey. He was so proud of their achievements on the football field both at club and county level and later at Raymonds achievements at taking the Mayo minor team to All Ireland final, as their manager.
He was so proud of them and his daughter Fiona and Mary also.
They in turn supported him and especially during his final illness which he bore with great patience and resignation.
Aidan was a truly Christian man and was always true to Mass and Sacraments and passed this on to his family. A family who will now miss him so very much.
Predeceased by his wife Tessie and brother Gerard, he is survived by his daughters Mary and Fiona, sons Raymond and Declan, grandchildren, sisters Mary and Alico, brothers Jackie, Oliver and Vincent, daughters in law, sons in law, cousins, neighbours and friends who are extended the deepest sympathies of all.
