Mayo captain Diarmuid O’Connor admits that they are already focusing on the Connacht SFC and a clash with New York.

O’Connor produced an excellent display as Mayo defeated Kerry to win the NFL title at Croke Park last Sunday.

However, the celebrations were short lived as they begin working towards the start of the provincial campaign which sees them travel to New York to take on the home side at Gaelic Park.

And when asked by the Western People if they would be focusing on the Connacht SFC sooner rather than later, O’Connor was unequivocal in his reply.

“Absolutely as I said, we’ll head straight on for the Connacht championship, looking at New York. We’ll look at the league, see where we’ve been doing well and keep working on those, and also see the areas that we need to improve on,” said O’Connor.

He added: “This is a new year, we weren’t really thinking of any past year. We just focused on what we needed to improve on from game-to-game.

“Thankfully it came right today in the second half and we got the win. It’s nice to be able to celebrate that with the supporters and hopefully we can drive on from here.”
