The local GAA club in Westport have been refused permission to hang a banner wishing the Mayo U20 football team the best of luck in Sunday's All-Ireland final, as it may dock the town's Tidy Towns points.

Only one banner has been given permission to be erected on Bridge Street, after an attempt to put another up has fallen by the wayside.

Although six Westport GAA players are on the panel for the final against Kildare, the Mayo News reports that Area Manager Padraic Walsh listed his concerns at July's West Mayo Municipal District meeting.

"A second banner visually will not look well and set a precedent into the future. The judging into the Tidy Towns is about to happen, and two banners on Bridge Street while the judging is going on certainly won't help.

Local councillor Brendan Mulroy was unhappy with the excuse: "If it was any other town in west Mayo they would be absolutely proud of their players.

"We have lost the plot here. I think it is a disgrace … that is the ultimate kick up the arse if you cannot erect a banner to a young lad or girl and wish them well.

"I'm bitterly disappointed that that is the response of the executive."
