Mayo defender Lee Keegan is well on his way to a return to the starting line up.

Having won only one of their opening three games in the NFL, Mayo manager Stephen Rochford will be hoping to have the 2016 Footballer of the Year back in the side sooner rather than later.

Keegan took time out from the game to clear up a persistent hip injury and he revealed to Newstalk's Off The Ball that he was well on his way to recovery.

"I had my referral, three month referral, there a couple of weeks ago and I got the all clear in terms of being able to go back running," stated Keegan.

"Mobility and flexibility within the hip joints are very good, so I'm happy with the news. I'm just literally following protocol with the medical team doctor and stuff like that. Thankfully I'm back on the pitch running for the last week and a half, two weeks - all pain free and all positive.

"I'm just looking to get back into training to burn up the lungs a little bit now. That's the hardest part. You can run straight all day; when you get back into the proper nature of the way we're playing, that's the hard stuff.

"I hope to get the second last game, last game definitely, because we have a short window there between the last game of the league towards May 13th, which is Galway in the championship."
