DREADNOTS 2-20
KILKERLEY EMMETS 0-10
Dreadnots bounced back from the disappointment of losing out to Newtown Blues in their opening group game by easily overcoming the challenge of Kilkerley Emmets at Stabannon on Saturday evening.
The Clogherhead men always looked to have the edge on their opponents and deservedly booked a quarter-final meeting with Nh Mairtin thanks to a strong second half performance.
Goals from Liam Shevlin and Pat Lynch at either end of the second period helped the Dreadnots cruise to victory, but the dismissal of James Shields in the final minute of the first half also had a huge bearing on the outcome.
The impressive Pepe Smith made the Dreadnots intentions clear when he fired over the first point after 30 seconds and although Shane Lennon levelled, Smith kicked three more to help his side lead 0-4 to 0-3 after 20 minutes.
Before the break the Dreadnots began to turn the screw and three points from James Califf helped his side lead by 0-9 to 0-5 at half time with Tadhg McEneaney kicking two points for Kilkerley. The Emmets suffered another blow when Shields picked up his second yellow following a challenge on Peter Kirwan.
Lennon kicked the first point of the second half after two minutes to reduce the gap but within six minutes the game was as good as over. Pat Lynch and Cian McEvoy pointed before Liam Shevlin grabbed his goal as the Clogher men went on to lead by 1-13 to 0-6.
Kilkerley continued to battle to the end but they were unable to make any inroads into the lead as the Dreadnots cruised through the final 20 minutes, with Lynch scoring the second goal five minutes from time.
