FL5A: Fionnbarra edged out in tight contest

August 05, 2020

Naomh Fionnbarra 2-9 (15) St. Josephs 2-11 (17)

Naomh Fionnbarra and St. Josephs played an entertaining game in blustery conditions in this Division 5A League clash in John Markey Park Ballygassan. In an evenly matched first half the Joes went in 1 point to the good at the break.  The Barrs scorers were Thomas McCreesh 0-4(2f) with some lovely points from play and dead balls, Padraic Murphy 0-2(1f) and Mairtin Murphy 1-0 with a fortuitous goal from long range.

Playing against the breeze and the hill in the second half the Togher men continuously took the game to their opponents with plenty of grit and determination.  All of the subs brought on made a difference especially James Butterly who scored a screamer in the top corner.  Other socrers in the 2nd half were Ciaran Markey from play, Oisin Madden with a lovely point and Thomas McCreesh with a close range free.  In an entertaining hard fought second half there were plenty of flash points and incidents as the Finbarrs finished with 13 men and the Jopes 14.  Alas, it was to no avail as the Barrs could not take the lead and finished the game 2 points in arrears.  Hard luck lads.

Naomh Fionnbarra team:  Matthew O'Reilly, Luke Kennedy, Colin McGrane, James Luckie; Oisin Madden 0-1, Niall Woods, Brendan Simms; Gary Matthews, Ciaran Markey; Patrick McArdle, Mairtin Murphy 1-0, Conor Woods; Padraic Murphy 0-2 (1f), Thomas McCreesh 0-5 (3f), Michael McArdle.  Subs:  Martin O'Neill for James Luckie, Patrick McGrane for Conor Woods, James Butterly for Patrick McArdle, Ciaran Boyle for Luke Kennedy.
