Leinster Club JFC: Emmets bow out in Offaly

November 11, 2019

Barry O'Hare Roche Emmets

SHANNONBRIDGE 2-13

ROCHE EMMETS 1-8

Roche Emmets’ memorable season came to an end on Saturday afternoon when they bowed out of the Leinster Junior Club Championship away to Shannonbridge of Offaly.

Having completed the Louth Championship and Division 3A League double, the Emmets made the trip to the midlands for the quarter-final with high hopes of making progress. However, on a difficult day for football it was the home side who proved too strong.

The Offaly champions played with the wind in their backs from the opening whistle and they made the perfect start when Darragh Corbett found the net inside the opening minute.

Despite that setback and having to face the elements, Roche competed well for the remainder of the first half and at the break were trailing by just 1-7 to 0-5 with Barry O’Hare, Kevin Callaghan and Dan O’Connell among the scorers.

However, their hopes did suffer a setback when they lost Liam Carthy to a red card just before the interval.

The Faughart side came out in the second half determined to get back into the game and they were very much alive entering the final quarter as a goal from Dan O’Connell cut the gap to just three points.

However, they were unable to build on that score as crucially Shannonbridge hit back with two points before sealing the victory when Jack D’Arcy added the second goal six minutes from the end.
