JFC final replay: Roche bounce back to claim Christy Bellew Cup

October 07, 2019

ROCHE EMMETS 2-7

GLYDE RANGERS 0-10

Roche Emmets made no mistake at the second time of asking as they finally got their hands on the Christy Bellew Cup with victory over Glyde Rangers in the Junior Championship Final replay at The Grove on Saturday evening.

The Faughart Parish side were denied victory right at the death in the original game but they showed great character to bounce back from that disappointment as they claimed a three-point victory.

In doing so they have completed a memorable league and championship double as they make a long-awaited return to the Intermediate ranks.

Once again it proved to be a close affair but goals from Shane Byrne and Dan O’Connell either side of the break proved decisive.

Barry O’Hare opened the scoring in the second minute and although Ciaran Sheridan levelled soon after, it was Roche who struck the first major blow when Shane Byrne found the net in the fifth minute.

Glyde settled themselves with points from Sheridan and Trevor O’Brien and it remained nip and tuck for the remainder of the half but a late point from the impressive Kevin Callaghan saw Roche take a 1-5 to 0-6 advantage into the break.

The Tallanstown side came out in the second half with renewed energy and points from O’Brien and Barry Sharkey had the teams level, before Ciaran Sheridan put Glyde ahead for the first time five minutes into the second half.

It was looking good for the Mid Louth men at the stage but their momentum was halted when Dan O’Connell got on the end of a good move to fist the ball home at the end of the third quarter.

Glyde never really recovered from that setback and managed to add just one more point to their tally. Roche sensed that the game was there for them and this time they were in no mood to let it slip from their grasp as points from Callaghan and Byrne sealed a memorable night for the Emmets.
