Newtown Blues set up another meeting with Nh Mairtin in the Louth Championship Final as they came from behind to defeat Dreadnots at The Grove on Sunday evening.

A late goal from Andy McDonnell got the Blues back into the game before Hugh McGinn came off the bench to slot over the winning point in the closing minutes.

The reigning champions will now be aiming to make it three successive titles when they take on Nh Mairtin in the decider on October 13.

The Dreadnots looked to be in the driving seat when they took a grip of the game in the early stages with points from James Califf and Pat Lynch before Califf, David O’Brien and Jay Hughes fired over to make it 0-5 to no score after 20 minutes.

The Blues were struggling for inspiration but finally got off the mark through Robert Carr on 25 minutes. That proved the signal for a late revival as points from Ciaran Downey, Colm Judge and Ross Nally cut the gap to just 0-5 to 0-4 at the break.

The Drogheda men got back on terms but when Pepe Smith (2) and Anthony Lynch fired over, the Dreadnots looked to be on course for victory with a 0-10 to 0-7 lead entering the final ten minutes.

However, McDonnell then claimed the only goal of the game before Downey put his side ahead for the first time. Smith responded to level the match again but his side were unable to finish the job and it was McGinn who sent over the late winner.
