SFC: Mochtas see off Gaels

July 15, 2019

St Mochtas Declan Byrne

ST MOCHTAS 1-13

DUNDALK GAELS 0-10

St Mochtas celebrated their return to senior football with an impressive display to see off the challenge of Dundalk Gaels at Dowdallshill on Sunday afternoon.

The reigning intermediate champions looked to be facing a difficult afternoon when they trailed by three points in the early stages but the soon took control of the game and a goal from Eamonn O’Neill helped them go on to win by six points.

The Gaels began the game on the front foot and although David Moloney’s opening score was cancelled out by Declan Byrne, the Dundalk men followed up with scores from Eanna McArdle, Ger McSorley and Gary Shevlin to lead by 0-4 to 0-1 inside the opening quarter.

However, the Mochtas recaptured the spirit that inspired their success last year as they levelled with points from Stephen McCooey (2) and Ciaran McMahon before O’Neill scored the only goal of the game.

Just before the break Gerry Garland added a point to send his team in leading by 1-5 to 0-4.

Scores from Jamie Farrell helped increase the gap to six points early in the second half but Gaels showed their determination to get something from the game as points from McArdle helped cut the gap to 1-8 to 0-8.

Once again, the Mochtas responded well to the challenge and they regained their composure as points from Garland, Craig Lennon and Byrne saw them record a deserved victory.
