DREADNOTS 1-15

ST PATRICKS 0-14

A goal inside the opening five minutes from Liam Shevlin proved crucial as Dreadnots began their Senior Championship campaign with a victory over St Patricks at The Grove on Sunday afternoon.

It was a relatively even contest thereafter as the Pats battled all the way and although they managed to take the lead early in the second half, it was the Clogherhead men who finished the stronger to secure a four-point win.

The Dreadnots couldn’t have asked for a better start as they had Shevlin’s goal and a Derek Shevlin point on the board inside five minutes before Danny O’Connor got the Pats off the mark.

James Califf pointed to make it 1-2 to 0-1 but the Pats response was impressive and with Cathal Grogan kicking three points along with efforts from O’Connor and Jack Murphy they were level at 0-8 to 1-5 at the break. Jay Hughes had his eye in at the other end as he found the target for the Dreadnots.

Hughes added his second inside five minutes of the second half before the Pats again scored three unanswered points inside two minutes through Grogan (2) and Darren O’Hanlon to take a two-point cushion at 0-11 to 1-6.

The Dreadnots replied with two vital points from Nathan Sutherland and Pepe Smith to get back on terms and that proved to be the turning point as the last 15 minutes saw their side take control and they secured victory with points from Peter Kirwan, Hughes and Pepe Smith.
