ACFL Div 3A / 3B round-up: perfect Roche claim title

June 13, 2019

Roche Emmets secured the Division 3A league crown after scoring a 0-15 to 1-9 win over Lannleire on Tuesday, as they made it eight wins from eight outings.

The Dunleer men needed victory to keep alive their own hopes of topping the table and as a result the first half was a tight affair with Roche taking a slender 0-7 to 0-6 advantage at the interval.

The second half saw the Faughart side gradually take command and points from Kevin Callaghan, Barry O’Hare and Liam Dawe saw them open up a gap. Colin Murphy kicked three points for Lannleire and although Paul Callan scored the only goal of the game, it was too late to deny Roche.

Na Piarsaigh moved ahead of Nh Malachi and away from the foot of the table thanks to a 2-14 to 2-8 win.

The Dundalk men scored the next three points before Mals got a free in the 10th minute to notch their second point. The Courtbane men then scored two goals in a two-minute period through Shane Rogers and Jamie Kelly, but Na Piarsaigh hit back to lead by 0-10 to 2-2 at half time.

The first score of the second half was a well-worked move finished off by Mark Larkin. Mals got the next two points which spurred Naps on to a lovely point from Robert Murphy and then a goal and a point from top scorer on the day, Mark Larkin. Na Piarsaigh always looked in control in the second half and a late goal by Gerard Smyth was the icing on the cake.

Division 3B

Westerns edged closer to the Division 3B title after a 2-16 to 1-6 win over Dowdallshill at Reaghstown.

Missing the services of talisman Noel Finnegan, the visitors started promisingly with a few early opportunities, but it was the home side who were the more clinical, and led by returning Countyman Tommy Durnin, raced into a 0-6 to no score lead by the end of the opening quarter.

The 'Hill finally got off the mark 21 mins in through Luke O'Brien, however any prospect of Pat Conlon's side staying in the game were extinguished, when Durnin got in for the game’s opening goal first half injury time. That left it 1-7 to 0-2 at the interval.

Westerns were never troubled on the restart and struck for their second goal on 41 minutes through Ciaran Scriven, to open up a 12-point lead.

Dowdallshill showed plenty of honest endeavour and were rewarded when Gerry McShane stuck away a penalty with 13 minutes left on the clock.

However, the Westerns landed four of the game’s last five scores to run out very comfortable winners.

Any thoughts the Sean’s had of keeping pressure on the leaders Westerns went out the window with a disappointing display against a very spirited Mitchels side who moved into second place thanks to a 3-14 to 1-7 win.

Although the visitors started very well, they failed to convert numerous scoring chances, including crashing the ball off the crossbar. However, once the home side got going it was all one-way traffic taking some fine scores with the Sean’s defence marked absent on numerous occasions.

At half time the Mitchels were leading by 0-11 to 0-3 and although Kevin McGahon it the net for the Seans in the second period they were unable to save the game.

Wolfe Tones lifted themselves off the foot of the table thanks to a 3-9 to 1-7 win over Annaghminnon Rovers at Stonetown.

Chris Cudden scored two first half goals as the Drogheda men led by 2-6 to 0-3 at half time.

Fergal Markey scored a second half goal for Annaghminnon but his side was unable to rescue the game as the Tones added a third goal through Paul Fleming.

Cuchulainn Gaels earned their revenge following a last minute defeat in Omeath two weeks ago by cruising to a 1-10 to 1-5 win in Jimmy Pentony Park on Monday evening.
The visitors dominated the first half with Jody Keenan, Ray Phillips, Brendan O’Hagan and Eoin McDonald landing points, with Cian McDonald  scoring the only goal.
The Nicks forward line was unable to register anything from play, a Phillip Kirwan free was all the home side could show for their first half efforts as the visitors led by 1-7 to 0-1 at the break.
The Nicks were a little better in the second half but the damage was already done. Points by Nathan Murray, Vinny O’Hare and a Kirwan free early in the half gave a brief glimpse of a comeback.
A Kirwan goal from the penalty spot following good work from Sam Reilly had them back to within four, but two late frees from Jody Keenan for the Gaels confirmed a deserved win.
