Sheelan Cup: Barrs record three-point win over Mattock

March 04, 2019

Naomh Fionnbarra 3-5 (14)

Mattock Rangers 1-8 (11)

Naomh Fionnbarra recorded a 3 point win over Mattock Rangers in the Paddy Sheelan Cup Round 3 on Sunday afternoon. Played in horrible wet and windy conditions both sides battled hard throughout on what was a day for the ducks.  The sides were level at the break 0-4 a piece.

Conditions deteriorated further in the second half as the game became a dog fight.  Goals as they say wind games and the Barrs got 3 in the second period.  Bernard Osborne scored the first major as a long ball into the square went straight into the net although the on rushing Jack Butterly did distract the goal keeper.  This was followed up immediately with another gaol by Osborne as the Finbarrs forwards broke up the short kick out and fed Osborne who clinically finished to the back of the net.  Andy McCann who was unleashed from his goalkeeping position in the second half grabbed the 3rd goal by flicking a 45m kick by Osborne past the Collon keeper to the back of the net.  The Mattcok men grabbed a consolation goal towards the end of the game but the gritty Finbarrs men held on for the win.

Naomh Fionnbarra team: Andy McCann 1-0; Martin O'Neill, Kalem Regan, Niall Woods; Bryan Sharkey, Chris McGlynn, Michael McArdle; John Doyle, Jack Butterly 0-1; Ciaran Markey, Mairtin Murphy 0-1, Thomas McCreesh, Bernard Osborne 2-3(2f), Gary Matthews, Padraig Murphy.
