Eire Og brought a barren spell for Carlow clubs on the Leinster Club SFC scene to an end at the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda today.

They became the first team from the county to secure a provincial win since 2008 at the expense of Newtown Blues

Two goals in as many first-half minutes from Murtough Ware and Brendan Kavanagh sent the Carlow town side on the road to a 2-9 to 0-8 win.

Joe Murphy’s charges led by 2-5 to 0-5 at the change of ends and shaded the second-half exchanges by 0-4 to 0-3.

The dismissals of substitute Jamie Kelly and Louth captain Andy McDonnell undermined the Blues’ chances of mounting a late comeback.

The Sean Gannon captained Eire Og will now renew acquaintances with Mullinalaghta in the last four and will be aiming to gain revenge for the defeat they suffered at the hands of the Longford champions 12 months ago.
