The late James Joseph Cunningham There was deep sadness and regret in Granard and its surrounds as news of the death of James Joseph (Jim Joe) Cunningham, Barrack St, Granard and formerly of Drumnacrehir, Dring spread. Jim Joe passed away peacefully on February 15, 2007 at the Regional Hospital, Mullingar following a short illness. Jim Joe was an avid supporter of Mullinalaghta GAA Club, St Columba's, despite living in Granard for many years. He held many positions with the Club down through out the years. He was Chairman of the Club from 1984 to 1989. He was the driving force of the initial development of "The Laurels" during that period. He spent many evenings there when the old dressing rooms were built and there were are many examples of his fine craftsman ship around the place. Many local people have said Jim Joe was loyal to the Club right until the very end. Apart from his love of football, Jim Joe was a very talented welder at a time when welding was a fine art and he owned a garage in Granard for over forty years. He is survived by his loving wife, Bridie; son Emmet, daughter Heather, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces , cousins, relatives and friends. His remains were brought to St Mary's Church, Granard, where a guard of honour was formed by the members of St Columba's GFC, with burial to Carra Cemetery after funeral mass. May he rest in peace.
