The late Davey Sheeran
It was with great sadness that the people of Killoe and Lanesboro heard of the death of Davey Sheeran, April 10th , 2006, following a short illness.
A native of Crieve, Killoe, Davey came from a family steeped in history - his father, David (Senior) was one of the men who took part in the Clonfin Ambush in 1921.
David went on to train as a veterinary surgeon and subsequently moved to Ballyleague where he resided right up until his death.
During his lifetime, Davey worked as a vet for the Dept of Agriculture and, at one time, also served as a publican, having acquired the Lifebelt bar in Ballyleague. A great man for "all things Irish", Davey had an abiding passion for horse and greyhound racing and GAA.
As a young man, Davey was a formidable football player with his first taste of victory coming in the form of the College All-Ireland Senior Football Title in 1948, which he won as a member of the St Mel's team.
More success beckoned as an adult player. Davey won Leader Cup and senior championship medals with Killoe in 1959; indeed he was one of the main tacticians behind the championship win of 1960 and lined out at full forward on the victorious team. He was also a member of the successful Longford Wanderers (Slashers) team of the mid fifties and also played for the county. In 2002, he received the Club Hall of Fame Award for his years of excellence within the GAA.
Another of Davey's major passions was greyhound racing and he was one of the main figures at the Longford Greyhound track right up until his death. He also trained his own greyhounds and was hugely devoted to keeping the sport alive in Longford.
Horse-racing was another sport which Davey took a huge interest in and every year, he and a group of friends, among them, former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, would visit the Listowel Races in Kerry.
Known as gregarious, enthusiastic and committed individual, Davey passed away after a short illness in Roscommon General Hospital. He was removed from his home to Ballyleague Church and he was laid to rest in Cullyfad cemetery. Davey is survived by his wife Marie and daughter Niamh.
May he rest in peace.
